Badger’s Woodland CraftsEllen Badger and Sophie Coberman
We are a small business consisting of Ellen & Sophie – two friends from South Yorkshire. We are on a mission to make beautiful things out of
unwanted or discarded items by applying our wood, textile and design skills. We use as many recycled materials as possible in our products, including our packaging, as we hate waste and things going to landfill needlessly. We are proud of the reclaimed provenance of the materials we use and always make this clear on our listings. Using recycled materials takes more time and love than simply buying off the shelf but it also means the end results are unique. As our items are inspired by things we acquire, our range is constantly changing and often only available for a short time only. We make everything ourselves to order so have lots of flexibility to create bespoke requests so, if you don’t see what you are looking for, just ask!
Badger’s Woodland Crafts was formed in May 2019 after a trip to Makers Central at the NEC where we happened upon a workshop with the fabulous Max McMurdo (from Dragon’s Den and channel 4’s ‘Find it, Fix it, Flog it’). We came away from there realising how much we wanted to make more and do something for ourselves after years of caring for our own complex families and in the midst of battling our own ill health.
Within 1 week we had a business name, logo, social media, spreadsheets galore and an ever-extending list and Pinterest board bursting with ideas for new makes. At one point our What’s App accounts nearly went into spontaneous combustion with all the ideas going back and forth.
From the start we have been clear that we want to create things from existing objects and bring new love to other people’s junk (I mean unwanted items).
We regularly scour charity shops and freecycle (and friends and family’s cupboards too when they announce a clear out!) to find materials. Between the two of us we have a range of skills which we are developing all the time, from woodwork, pyrography, macrame, crochet, upholstery and more.
With four autistic children between us, plus many other chronic health conditions of our own and within our families, we are always keen to support charities whenever we can and often hold charity auction events. We are delighted to have recently acquired our first shop space in partnership with Age UK at their flagship store supporting local makers in Bradway, Sheffield.
So that’s us – two crazy ladies affectionately referred to as bodger and badger behind the scenes (generational reference!).
