Please describe your product range.
Working from my studio at Exchange Place in Sheffield city centre, I hand make hats, fascinators and hair accessories using traditional millinery techniques. My hair accessories make perfect stocking filler gifts, but there is something for all ages and budgets in my shop. I also offer a bespoke service for clients who are in need of headwear for special occasions such as weddings or race days.
I started an Etsy shop because…
It was a natural progression. I had been selling at craft and vintage fairs across the region and beyond…so I decided to expand my customer base to the places I couldn’t get to on a train! Thanks to Etsy I have had clients from every continent and now regularly sell internationally. I can’t do that on a train!
I feel inspired by…
All sorts of things. Most of my hat design ideas stem from the materials themselves. I don’t have a formal design process, but a big box of “Things I want to use next”. I have a root through that and choose my start point, which may be a flower or a particular piece of fabric. I then find the other materials I have to hand that look good with it…or I might go shopping for them! The design for the hat is then developed around the qualities, characteristics and potential of my chosen materials.
When I’m working on Etsy, I like to listen to…
Radio 6. I love the eclectic choice of their playlist. Although I am prone to warbling along…luckily, I haven’t had any official complaints from my studio neighbours yet!
